We fight all day and our worries fall upon deaf ears. We teeter on apathy at times, as our leaders fail us day in and day out. But hope is not lost.
The Fiji Islands are renowned for being some of the best vacation spots. They provide a warm, tropical area with beautiful views.
It’s generally known that the Pacific islands are at the forefront of climate change, despite being some of the smallest contributors. When I talk about it to others, a common response is that people are rushing to fly in. They want to take in the view while they “still can” — accepting defeat, accepting that Fiji is a lost effort. However, for locals, they cannot do that. And for people like me, who have cultural and familial ties, we want to preserve it for as long as possible.

Here are three ways Fiji is entering the climate battle:
1. Commitment to 100% Renewable Energy
Fiji has committed themselves to be powered by 100% renewable energy by 2030, and is currently generating roughly 60%, even though they are dealing with issues with reoccurring dry spells impacting their hydroelectricity input.
2. Implementing Adaptation Measures
They’ve started improving infrastructure and relocating individuals, like some of my relatives who had to leave for higher grounds in Levuka.
3. Advocacy, Collaboration, and Leadership
In 2017, Fiji presided over the United Nations Climate Change Conference, and are still currently putting climate change in the forefront of their mind by collaborating with neighboring Pacific islands.
And so much more! Every country has their faults, Fiji included, but let this show us that there is hope. Not every country is apathetic. Some are standing behind our efforts.
